Quote from theoldman on 15/07/2025, 8:59 amI was greatly enjoying listening to the archive episodes of ISIHAC but it seems to have disappeared.
Any suggestions as to why it's gone and where I might find another source?
Thanks very much.

Thanks BBC, you belong in the past, have little relevance in the present and definitely no future.
Keep up the great work on Dimsdale and don't let the BBC grind you down.

Quote from Fat Fred on 22/07/2025, 11:32 amTypical dog-in-a-manger attitude from the BBC: they don't want to make their own archive material available to anybody else, even at a price - but they don't want anybody else to make it available either.
Why didn't I download all the episodes from Dimsdale while I had the chance? I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue.

Quote from tobias on 27/07/2025, 4:49 amThe BBC shut down their BBC Sounds app on July 21 2025 for international listeners. They switched them all over to a new bbc.com app with only a very limited offering of podcasts including dramas etc. You can purchase a subscription for access at US$8.99/mth or US$49.99 per year through bbc.com. But what are you buying? They aren't providing enough information to be able to evaluate what exactly you will get for your money other than a weak promise that much more will be available in coming months. Talk about inept marketing and service... Own goal!

Interesting. On 27 March 2025, https://www.cordbusters.co.uk/bbc-asking-million-people-shape-future/ reported that Dr Samir Shah and Tim Davie, respectively Chair and Director-General of the BBC, have "firmly rejected advertising and subscription models as alternatives" to the existing licence fee system. It's not immediately obvious why they have done so, if they are already operating a subscription model for consumers of their services in the USA.

Quote from tobias on 30/07/2025, 2:03 amThe way I interpret it having taken a look at the article and what we know about international listeners is:
The BBC is caught in a stagnant home market with low rates of usage and resistance to licence fees let along any increases or other types of funding. So, international listeners and viewers will cross-subsidize domestic British users. British users won't need to pay the monthly or annual subscriptions. Many will point out they've already paid through taxation. Brits have votes, international listeners do not. National governments in UK and USA, for example, are no longer interested in soft power through media: news, arts, podcasts etc. and no longer want to fund it. Meantime, to step outside our narrower topic, China is racing ahead building soft power this way not only in newly emerging areas of the world but also in high-income societies. Many will not notice until these changes are well entrenched.
