Nicholas Craig (Nigel Planer) - I, An Actor (1989)
Quote from darkpenguin on 21/01/2024, 8:00 amTurns out it was just 6 episodes, repeated.
These have been digitised and posted on Nigel Planer's Patreon site, but sadly they were done at a very low bitrate, and so Mr Craig sounds like a Dalek underwater.
When he locates the cassettes again in his archive he's promised to send them to me and I will do them properly.

I'm afraid I don't have the full episodes, have just listed to the short previews available on Patreon. The quality is appalling though, so probably not worth trying to clean up.

I, An Airing
25th March 2026
BREAKING NICHOLAS CRAIG NEWS. I'll say it very close to the microphone, actually, because I think it's important.
The first episode of Nicholas Craig's BBC Radio 4 series I, An Actor, adapted from his book of the same name, made its debut on 4 Extra last weekend - its first airing since 1989.
The broadcast was suggested by listener Keverne Smith (presumably the Shakespearian scholar) as part of BBC Radio 4 Extra’s All Request Weekend.
The BBC even dug out an appropriately showbizzy archive photograph of Craig with which to illustrate the broadcast (though many might note its resemblance to when Nigel was the Narrator in the 2006-2007 production of The Rocky Horror Show).
We'd previously put this episode up on this Patreon in June 2023, along with the rest of the series, but a fairly dodgy encode from some rotten old cassettes so it's delightful to hear the show in broadcast quality.
As I understand it 4 Extra have been attempting to repeat I, An Actor for years, but wasn't able for dull legal reasons. (Nigel had to okay the repeats twice on paper at the time, as writer and as performer, and through some oversight one of these wasn't okayed. It's not a rare occurrence, repeats of the radio version of The Likely Lads for example were blocked for similar reasons.) Anyway thanks to Nigel's people and my friend at the Beeb (who I won't name in case they wish to remain anonymous) it's all been sorted out and this repeat was possible.
Would be nice if BBC 4 Extra broadcast the rest of the series, don't you think? Far be it for me to suggest you email polite requests to radio4extra@bbc.co.uk

Quote from darkpenguin on 17/04/2026, 2:00 amResult! After 5 years of effort (and a 37 year wait), we finally have some excellent news on this. I heard from the Senior Scheduling Co-ordinator at Radio 4 Extra:
Many thanks for your email and programme suggestion.
It was always our intention to broadcast the full series of I, An Actor following its clearance and a repeat of the first episode during our recent All Request Weekend.
I am happy able to say that the first episode will be repeated on Sunday, June 13 at 8.45am followed by the rest of the series on consecutive weeks.
I hope that you shall be able to enjoy this series again, together with other programmes in our schedule.
Yours sincerely
